A whale on old granaries

In 1874–81 four brick granaries were built here to store grain arriving by boat; one was destroyed by bombs in the Second World War. Next to them stood the Elevator, once the city's largest building — fifty metres high, ninety long, with pioneering electric lighting in 1883 and a railway running through it. In 2013 the Dutch architect Kas Oosterhuis wrapped the surviving warehouses in a curving glass-and-steel shell: first called CET, everyone soon named it the Whale.
