The Legacy of Gozsdu Manó and the History of Gozsdu Courtyard
Early 20th Century to Present Day
Gozsdu Manó, a wealthy Romanian lawyer, amassed his fortune by successfully defending aristocrats in criminal cases, which enabled him to establish the Gozsdu Foundation. Commissioned by the Gozsdu Foundation, the Gozsdu Courtyard complex was built in 1901 as a straightforward investment. This complex of seven buildings and six courtyards serves as an important passage connecting Király, Holló, Rumbach Sebestyén, Dob, and Kazinczy streets. While initially housing a mix of tenants, it gradually became a significant center for the Jewish community, bustling with small retail shops. Although its exact role during the Holocaust is not specified, the courtyard would have been within the Budapest Ghetto boundaries. Following the change of regime, Gozsdu Courtyard underwent a significant revival, transforming into a vibrant hub of gastronomy and entertainment that attracted young people. Today, it remains a lively passage with restaurants, bars, and venues, where Orthodox Jewish families reside and many visitors arrive from abroad for holidays.
