Drilling for treasure beneath the park

Long before the bath existed, the water came first. From 1868 to 1878 the engineer Vilmos Zsigmondy drilled a well under the park, almost a kilometre deep, and hot water came up. During the planning in the 1880s the project was called the Artesian bath, after the pressurised water that would feed it.

The bath itself was designed by Győző Czigler in Neo-Baroque style. He died in 1905, before it was built; others finished the work, and it opened in 1913 under the name of the reformer István Széchenyi.
