The Genesis of Pest's Earliest Animal Market
Medieval, 13th century
The square's historical significance lies in its role as Pest's earliest animal market, a central economic hub for the burgeoning medieval city. It emerged organically at the convergence of two crucial trade routes: the road from Szeged (along today's Kecskeméti utca) and the road from Hatvan-Kerepcs (along today's Kossuth Lajos utca). Where these major thoroughfares met, medieval blocks of houses near the Franciscan church created an open space. By the 13th century, this area had developed into a "significant large square," which presumably became the primary site for the city's animal market due to its strategic location at the crossroads of regional trade. As Pest expanded, the animal market gradually relocated to more peripheral areas.

The Spolarich Dynasty's Unsuccessful Kárpátia Venture

The Spolarich dynasty, whose empire was steadily expanding, acquired the Kárpátia restaurant in Ferenciek tere in 1925. However, this venture proved unsuccessful under their management, as they subsequently drove the Kárpátia into bankruptcy ten years after its acquisition.
