The story

Marbles on the pavement

In 2007, for the anniversary of Ferenc Molnár's novel The Paul Street Boys, a bronze group by Péter Szanyi was set up on the pavement at Práter utca 11, in front of the school. It shows the scene where little Nemecsek and his friends play marbles while the Pásztor brothers watch them menacingly, just before the 'einstand', when the older boys take the marbles away. A passage from the novel is written on the school wall behind them. The novel's 'grund', the empty lot the boys defend, was one of the many fenced vacant plots that the growing city still had around 1900.
