Halászbástya (Fisherman's Bastion)
Imagine stepping into a fairytale, discovering a fortress-like marvel perched high above the Danube. From its pristine white towers and intricate arcades, you’ll be treated to unparalleled, panoramic vistas across the city. This isn't just a viewpoint; it’s an experience for the senses. Feel the cool, carved stone beneath your fingertips, listen to the city's distant hum, and let your imagination roam.
The Predecessor of Halászbástya
Before the Halászbástya was constructed, a prominent fortification known as the Híradás bástya or Őrtorony (Watchtower) occupied this viewpoint. This earlier structure was noted for its commanding position, offering a magnificent panoramic view of Buda's Danube side. Eventually, the Halászbástya was built, with its highest tower now standing precisely where this older bastion once stood.

Fisherman's Bastion's Role in Buda Castle's 1944 Defense
1944
During the 1944 fascist takeover attempt, General Lázár Károly, commander of the gubernatorial guard, ordered the mining of entrances leading towards the Fisherman's Bastion, along with the Bécsi Gate and the palace garden. These actions were implemented as strategic defensive measures for Buda Castle, aiming to protect it from the attacking forces.
